The Family Business
Burkhalter Cow and Calf has a rich history and humble beginning in NE Oklahoma, Rufus and Reanna Burkhalter purchased 200 acres in 1939 to run cattle and row crop and raised their family of 11 children. One of their sons Alton Burkhalter Sr. married Zetta M. Mc Griff then raising their family of 12 children there and passed on the love of agriculture to their son Marcus who married Eletha M. Grizzard and established the Burkhalter Cow and Calf operation on the same acreage. Marcus and Eletha now operate their ranch with their son Jordon and his wife Cherokee their daughters Mya and River with assistance from Marcus’ elder brother Ronald Burkhalter Sr. and Beverly Gory. Our daughter Tera Arnold is currently raising our next generation of cow punchers twin boys Kaden and Kollin with her husband Kevin in nearby Fort Smith; we anticipate their input of labor into the operation as they grow.

Our Mission is to offer excellent Angus beef to the consumer from the ranch which began with 25 brahma cross cows bred to Simmental then Tarantaise bulls in 1982. Due to drought and loss of leases in 2006 we sold our entire herd and raised angus heifers for the rebuilding our herd and transitioned to an all-commercial angus cows and registered Angus bulls in 2012 then began the purchase of the original 200 acres in 2015. We operate a 150 head cow operation producing all forage and hay for our cattle with purchased feed supplements for wintering and backgrounding cattle. Our selected calves are finished at a family-owned feed yard in central Oklahoma by a professional feedlot operation. Here at Burkhalter Cow and Calf we prefer to market our cattle as a pasture to plate operation.
